Oh it's pleasant sitting hereA
Seeing all the people passB
You beside your bock of beerC
I behind my demi tasseB
Chatting of no matter whatD
You the Mummer I the BardE
Oh it's jolly is it notF
Sitting on the BoulevardE
-
More amusing than a bookG
If a chap has eyes to seeB
For no matter where I lookG
Stories stories jump at meB
Moving tales my pen might writeH
Poems plain on every faceB
Monologues you could reciteH
With inimitable graceB
-
Ah Imagination's powerI
See yon demi mondaine thereJ
Idly toying with a flowerI
Smiling with a pensive airJ
Well her smile is but a maskK
For I saw within her muffL
Such a wicked little flaskK
Vitriol ugh the beastly stuffL
-
Now look back beside the barM
See yon curled and scented beauN
Puffing at a fine cigarM
Sale esp ce de maquereauM
Well of course it's all surmiseB
It's for him she holds her placeB
When he passes she will riseB
Dash the vitriol in his faceB
-
Quick they'll carry him awayO
Pack him in a Red Cross carM
Her they'll hurry so they sayO
To the cells of St LazareO
What will happen then you askK
What will all the sequel beB
Ah Imagination's taskK
Isn't easy let me seeB
-
She will go to jail no doubtP
For a year or maybe twoQ
Then as soon as she gets outP
Start her bawdy life anewQ
He will lie within a wardR
Harmless as a man can beB
With his face grotesquely scarredE
And his eyes that cannot seeB
-
Then amid the city's dinS
He will stand against a wallT
With around his neck a tinS
Into which the pennies fallT
She will pass I see it plainU
Like a cinematographL
She will halt and turn againV
Look and look and maybe laughL
-
Well I'm not so sure of thatW
Whether she will laugh or cryM
He will hold a battered hatW
To the lady passing byM
He will smile a cringing smileX
And into his grimy holdY
With a laugh or sob the whileX
She will drop a piece of goldY
-
Bless you lady he will sayO
And get grandly drunk that nightH
She will come and come each dayO
Fascinated by the sightH
Then somehow he'll get to knowN
Maybe by some kindly friendZ
Who she is and so and soN
Bring my story to an endZ
-
How his heart will burst with hateA2
He will curse and he will cryM
He will wait and wait and waitA2
Till again she passes byM
Then like tiger from its lairM
He will leap from out his placeB
Down her clutch her by the hairM
Smear the vitriol on her faceB
-
Ah Imagination rareM
See he takes his hat to goN
Now he's level with her chairM
Now she rises up to throwN
God and she has done it tooQ
Oh those screams those hideous screamsB
I imagined and it's trueQ
How his face will haunt my dreamsB
-
What a sight It makes me sickB2
Seems I am to blame somehowC2
Garcon fetch a brandy quickB2
There I'm feeling better nowC2
Let's collaborate we twoQ
You the Mummer I the BardE
Oh what ripping stuff we'll doQ
Sitting on the BoulevardE
