Old David Smail Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH CICI JKJK

He dreamed away his hours in schoolA
He sat with such an absent airB
The master reckoned him a foolA
And gave him up in dull despairB
-
When other lads were making hayC
You'd find him loafing by the streamD
He'd take a book and slip awayC
And just pretend to fish and dreamD
-
His brothers passed him in the raceE
They climbed the hill and clutched the prizeF
He did not seem to heed his faceE
Was tranquil as the evening skiesF
-
He lived apart he spoke with fewG
Abstractedly through life he wentH
Oh what he dreamed of no one knewG
And yet he seemed to be contentH
-
I see him now so old and grayC
His eyes with inward vision dimI
And though he faltered on the wayC
Somehow I almost envied himI
-
At last beside his bed I stoodJ
And is Life done so soon he sighedK
It's been so rich so full so goodJ
I've loved it all and so he diedK
