I could have sold him up becauseA
His rent was long past dueB
And Grimes my lawyer said it wasC
The proper thing to doB
But how could I be so inhumanD
And me a gentle womanD
-
Yet I am poor as chapel mouseE
Pinching to make ends meetF
And have to let my little houseE
To buy enough to eatF
Why even now to keep agoingG
I have to take in sewingG
-
Sylvester is a widowed manH
Clerk in a hardware storeI
I guess he does the best he canH
To feed his kiddies fourI
It sure is hard don't think it funnyJ
I've lately loaned him moneyJ
-
I want to wipe away a tearK
Even to just supposeL
Some monster of an auctioneerM
Might sell his sticks and clothesN
I'd rather want for bread and butterO
Than see them in the gutterO
-
A silly soft old thing am IP
But oh them kiddies fourI
I guess I'll make a raisin pieP
And leave it at their doorI
Some Sunday dears you'll share my dreamQ
Fried chicken and ice creamQ
