When I attended Mass todayA
A coloured maid sat down by meB
And as I watched her kneel and prayA
Her reverence was good to seeB
For whether there may be or no'C
A merciful and mighty GodD
The love for Him is like a glowE
That glorifies the meanest clodD
-
And then a starched and snotty dameF
Who sat the other side of meB
Said Monsieur is it not a shameF
Such things should be allowed to beB
In my homeland I'm proud to sayA
We know to handle niggers rightD
And wouldn't let a black wench prayA
And worship God beside a whiteD
-
Her tone so tart bewilderd meB
For I am just a simple manC
A friend in every one I seeB
Though yellow brown or black and tanC
For I would father children fiveG
With any comely coloured maidD
And lush with any man aliveG
Of any race of any shadeD
-
Religion may be false or trueH
The Churches may be wrong or rightD
But if there be the Faith in youH
It can be like a shining lightD
And though I lack not pietyB
And pray my best I'm sure that GodD
To that black wench and not to meB
Would give his most approving nodD
-
Aye you may scrub him day and nightD
You'll never change a nigger's hideD
But maybe he is just as whiteD
Or even more than you insideD
