| But much more often I have not | B |
| Oh I have been so much amused | A |
| By those who've put me on the spot | B |
| And measured me by rules above | C |
| Those I observe with equal love | C |

| An artisan of verse am I | D |
| Of simple sense and humble tone | E |
| My Thesaurus is handy by | D |
| A rhyming lexicon I own | E |
| Without them I am ill at ease | F |
| What bards would use such aids as these | F |

| Bad poets make good verse they say | G |
| The Great have not distained to woo | H |
| The modest muse of every day | G |
| Read Longfellow and Byron through | H |
| The fabric test much verse you'll see | I |
| Compared with what is poetry | I |

| Small blame one cannot always soar | J |
| To heights of hyaline sublime | K |
| Melodious prose one must deplore | J |
| And fetters of rebellious rhyme | K |
| Keats Browning that's another tale | L |
| But even Giants fail and fail | L |

| I've worshipped Ryley Harte and Field | M |
| And though their minstrelsy I lack | N |
| To them heart homage here I yield | M |
| And follow with my verseman's pack | N |
| To them with gratitude I look | O |
| For briefing me to make this book | O |
