Day after day behold me plyingA
My pen within an office drearB
The dullest dog till homeward hieingA
Then lo I reign a king of cheerB
A throne have I of padded leatherB
A little court of kiddies threeB
A wife who smiles whate'er the weatherB
A feast of muffins jam and teaB
-
The table cleared a romping battleC
A fairy tale a Children bedD
A kiss a hug a hush of prattleC
God save each little drowsy headD
A cozy chat with wife a sewingA
A silver lining clouds that low'rB
Then she too goes and with her goingA
I come again into my HourB
-
I poke the fire I snugly settleC
My pipe I prime with proper careB
The water's purring in the kettleC
Rum lemon sugar all are thereB
And now the honest grog is steamingA
And now the trusty briar's aglowE
Alas in smoking drinking dreamingA
How sadly swift the moments goE
-
Oh golden hour 'twixt love and dutyB
All others I to others giveF
But you are mine to yield to BeautyB
To glean Romance to greatly liveG
For in my easy chair recliningA
I feel the sting of ocean sprayB
And yonder wondrously are shiningA
The Magic Isles of Far AwayB
-
Beyond the comber's crashing thunderB
Strange beaches flash into my kenH
On jetties heaped head high with plunderB
I dance and dice with sailor menH
Strange stars swarm down to burn above meB
Strange shadows haunt strange voices greetI
Strange women lure and laugh and love meB
And fling their bastards at my feetI
-
Oh I would wish the wide world overB
In ports of passion and unrestJ
To drink and drain a tarry roverB
With dragons tattooed on my chestJ
With haunted eyes that hold red gloriesK
Of foaming seas and crashing shoresL
With lips that tell the strangest storiesK
Of sunken ships and gold moidoresK
-
Till sick of storm and strife and slaughterB
Some ghostly night when hides the moonM
I slip into the milk warm waterB
And softly swim the stale lagoonM
Then through some jungle python hauntedN
Or plumed morass or woodland wildO
I win my way with heart undauntedP
And all the wonder of a childO
-
The pathless plains shall swoon around meB
The forests frown the floods appallQ
The mountains tiptoe to confound meB
The rivers roar to speed my fallQ
Wild dooms shall daunt and dawns be goryB
And Death shall sit beside my kneeB
Till after terror torment gloryB
I win again the sea the seaB
-
Oh anguish sweet Oh triumph splendidN
Oh dreams adieu my pipe is deadD
My glass is dry my Hour is endedN
It's time indeed I stole to bedD
How peacefully the house is sleepingA
Ah why should I strange fortunes planR
To guard the dear ones in my keepingA
That's task enough for any manR
-
So through dim seas I'll ne'er go spoilingA
The red Tortugas never roamS
Please God I'll keep the pot a boilingA
And make at least a happy homeS
My children's path shall gleam with rosesK
Their grace abound their joy increaseK
And so my Hour divinely closesK
With tender thoughts of praise and peaceK
