I never killed a bear becauseA
I always thought them critters wasB
So kindo' cuteC
Though round my shack they often cameD
I'd raise my rifle and take aimD
But couldn't shootC
Yet there was one full six feet tallE
Who came each night and gobbled allE
The grub in sightF
On my pet garden truck he'd feastG
Until I thought I must at leastG
Give him a fightF
-
I put some corn mush in a panH
He lapped it swiftly down and ranH
With bruin gleeI
A second day I did the sameD
Again with eagerness he cameD
To gulp and fleeI
The third day I mixed up a crossJ
Of mustard and tobasco sauceJ
And ginger tooK
Well spiced with pepper of cayenneL
Topped it with treacled mush and thenL
Set out the brewK
-
He was a huge and husky chapM
I saw him shamble to the trapM
The dawn was dimN
He squatted down on his behindO
And through the cheese cloth window blindO
I peeked at himN
I never saw a bear so gladP
A look of joy seraphic hadP
His visage brownQ
He slavered and without suspishR
Ion hugged that horrid dishR
And swilled it downQ
-
Just for a moment he was stillS
Then he erupted loud and shrillS
With frantic yellT
The picket fence he tried to vaultU
He turned a double somersaultU
And ran like hellT
I saw him leap into the lakeV
As if a thirst of fire to slakeV
And thrash up foamW
And then he sped along the shoreX
And beat his breast with raucous roarX
And made for homeW
-
I guess he told the folks back thereY
My homestead was taboo for bearY
For since that dayZ
Although my pumpkins star the groundA2
No other bear has come aroundA2
Nor trace of bruin have I foundA2
Well let me prayZ
