A child saw in the morning skiesA
The dissipated looking moonB
And opened wide her big blue eyesA
And cried Look look my lost balloonB
And clapped her rosy hands with gleeC
Quick mother Bring it back to meC

Espied the moon's reflected charmsE
And ravished by that beauty blondeD
Leapt out to clasp her in his armsE
And as he'd never learnt to swimF
Poor fool that was the end of himF

A rustic glimpsed amid the treesG
The bluff moon caught as in a snareH
They say it do be made of cheeseG
Said Giles and that a chap bides thereH
That Blue Boar ale be strong I vowI
The lad's a winkin' at me nowI

Two lovers watched the new moon holdJ
The old moon in her bright embraceK
Said she There's mother pale and oldJ
And drawing near her resting placeK
Said he Be mine and with me wedL
Moon high she stared she shook her headL

A soldier saw with dying eyesA
The bleared moon like a ball of bloodM
And thought of how in other skiesA
So pearly bright on leaf and budM
Like peace its soft white beams had lainN
Like Peace He closed his eyes againO

Ah yes old Moon what things you've seenQ
I marvel now as you look downP
How can your face be so sereneQ
And tranquil still you'll make your roundR
Old Moon when we are undergroundR
