IA
-
The Moon is like a ping pong ballB
I lean against the orchard wallB
And see it soar into the voidC
A silky sphere of celluloidC
-
Then fairy fire enkindles itD
Like gossamer by taper litD
Until it glows above the treesE
As mellow as a Cheddar cheeseE
-
And up and up I watch it pressF
Into appalling lonelinessG
Like realms of ice without a stainH
A corpse Moon come to life againI
-
Ruthless it drowns a sturdy starJ
That seeks its regal way to barJ
Seeming with conscious power to growK
And sweeter purer gladder glowK
-
Dreaming serenely up the skyA
Until exultantly on highA
It shimmers with superb delightL
The silver navel of the nightL
-
IIA
-
I have a compact to communeM
A monthly midnight with the MoonM
Into its face I stare and stareN
And find sweet understanding thereN
-
As quiet as a toad I sitD
And tell my tale of days to itD
The tessellated yarn I've spunO
In thirty spells of star and sunO
-
And the Moon listens pensivelyK
As placid as a lamb to meP
Until I think there's just us twoQ
In silver world of mist and dewQ
-
-
In all of spangled space but IA
To stare moon struck into the skyA
Of billion beings I aloneR
To praise the Moon as still as stoneR
-
And seal a bond between us twoQ
Closer than mortal ever knewQ
For as mute masses I intoneR
The Moon is mine and mine aloneR
-
IIIA
-
To know the Moon as few men mayS
One must be just a little feyS
And for our friendship's sake I'm gladT
That I am just a trifle madT
-
And one with all the wild wise thingsU
The furtive folk of fur and wingsU
That hold the Moon within their eyesV
And make it nightly sacrificeW
-
O I will watch the maiden MoonM
Dance on the sea with silver shoonM
But with the Queen Moon I will keepX
My tryst when all the world's asleepX
-
As I have kept by land and seaP
That tryst for half a centuryP
Entranced in sibylline suspenseY
Beyond a world of common senseY
-
Until one night the Moon aloneM
Will look upon a graven stoneM
I wonder will it miss me thenM
Its lover more than other menM
-
Or will my wistful ghost be thereN
Down ages dim to stare and stareN
On silver nights without a stirZ
The Moon's Eternal WorshipperZ
