All day he lay upon the sandB
When summer sun was brightC
And let the grains sift through his handB
With infantile delightC
Just like a child so soft and fairD
Though he was twenty fiveE
An innocent my mother careD
Had kept so long aliveE
-
Oh it is hard to bear a crossF
For five and twenty yearsG
A daft son and a husband's lossF
Are woes out weighing tearsH
Yet bright and beautiful was heI
Though barely could he walkJ
And when he signaled out to seaI
His talk was baby talkJ
-
The man I loved was drowned out thereD
When we were ten weeks wedK
'Tis bitter hard a boy to bearD
That's fathered by the deadK
And now I give my life to himL
Because he needs me soM
And as I look my sight is dimL
With pity love and woeM
-
Then suddenly I see him riseN
Tall stalwart and sereneO
Lo There he stands before my eyesN
The man he might have beenP
-
Dear Mother mine I hear him sayQ
The curse that bound me fastR
Some miracle has swept awayQ
And all you pain is pastR
Now I am strong and sane and freeI
And you shall have your dueS
For as you loved and cherished meI
I'll love and cherish youS
-
His kisses sooth away my painT
His clasp is paradiseU
Then then I look at him againV
With terror in my eyesN
-
For down he sinks upon the sandB
And heavy droops his headK
The golden grains drift through his handB
I know my boy is deadK
