Maids In May Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CCCC DCDC EFEF CCCC GHGHICIC JKJK FL

Three maids there were in meadow brightA
The eldest less then sevenB
Their eyes were dancing with delightA
And innocent as HeavenB
-
Wild flowers they wound with tender gleeC
Their cheeks with rapture rosyC
All radiant they smiled at meC
When I besought a posyC
-
She gave me a columbineD
And one a poppy brought meC
The tiniest with eyes ashineD
A simple daisy sought meC
-
And as I went my sober wayE
I heard their careless laughterF
Their hearts too happy with to dayE
To care for what comes afterF
-
-
-
That's long ago they're gone all threeC
To walk amid the shadowsC
Forgotten is their lyric gleeC
In still and sunny meadowsC
-
For Columbine loved life too wellG
And went adventure fairingH
And sank into the pit of hellG
And passed but little caringH
While Poppy was a poor man's wifeI
And children had a plentyC
And went worn out with toil and strifeI
When she was five and twentyC
-
And Daisy died while yet a childJ
As fragile blossoms perishK
When Winter winds are harsh and wildJ
With none to shield and cherishK
-
Ah me How fate is dark and dourF
To little Children of the PoorL
