Mad Maria Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD BBAAEEFF GGHHIJKK FF LLLLHH GGLLFFLL

Mad Maria in the SquareA
Sits upon a wicker chairA
When the keeper asks the priceB
Mad Maria counts her liceB
No pesito can she payC
So he shrugs and goes awayC
Hopes she'll pay him with her prayersD
Shabby keeper of the chairsD
-
Mad Maria counts her liceB
Cracks them once and cracks them twiceB
Combs them from her sunny hairA
People stop to turn and stareA
Innocent in thought and deedE
Mad Maria pays no heedE
And the Cross upon her breastF
Proves her blessed of the blestF
-
So she sings her little songG
Happy as the day is longG
hunting in her camisoleH
Shy partakers of her doleH
thinking Heaven please forgiveI
Even lice have leave to liveJ
But sweet Reader do not blameK
For she kills them just the sameK
-
Mad Maria goes unchidF
Mildest maid in all MadridF
-
While around in serried ranksL
Rear the bold facades of BanksL
But when wrath of Heaven smitesL
Hosts of Mammon's parasitesL
Mad Maria will not fallH
Being oh so very smallH
-
Pariahs to God belongG
to be weak is to be strongG
Fools are richer than the wiseL
And who see with shining eyesL
Angels in the sordid streetF
Deem their happiness completeF
Mad Maria counts her beadsL
Cracks her lice and Heaven heedsL
