Foreword: Rhymes Of A Red Cross Man Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCCCCCDA EEFFGGHHCCCCEE IICCJJKKCCCC LMNNOOI've tinkered at my bits of rhymes | A |
In weary woeful waiting times | A |
In doleful hours of battle din | B |
Ere yet they brought the wounded in | B |
Through vigils of the fateful night | C |
In lousy barns by candle light | C |
In dug outs sagging and aflood | C |
On stretchers stiff and bleared with blood | C |
By ragged grove by ruined road | C |
By hearths accurst where Love abode | C |
By broken altars blackened shrines | D |
I've tinkered at my bits of rhymes | A |
- | |
I've solaced me with scraps of song | E |
The desolated ways along | E |
Through sickly fields all shrapnel sown | F |
And meadows reaped by death alone | F |
By blazing cross and splintered spire | G |
By headless Virgin in the mire | G |
By gardens gashed amid their bloom | H |
By gutted grave by shattered tomb | H |
Beside the dying and the dead | C |
Where rocket green and rocket red | C |
In trembling pools of poising light | C |
With flowers of flame festoon the night | C |
Ah me by what dark ways of wrong | E |
I've cheered my heart with scraps of song | E |
- | |
So here's my sheaf of war won verse | I |
And some is bad and some is worse | I |
And if at times I curse a bit | C |
You needn't read that part of it | C |
For through it all like horror runs | J |
The red resentment of the guns | J |
And you yourself would mutter when | K |
You took the things that once were men | K |
And sped them through that zone of hate | C |
To where the dripping surgeons wait | C |
And wonder too if in God's sight | C |
War ever ever can be right | C |
- | |
Yet may it not be crime and war | L |
But effort misdirected are | M |
And if there's good in war and crime | N |
There may be in my bits of rhyme | N |
My songs from out the slaughter mill | O |
So take or leave them as you will | O |
