Foreword: Rhymes Of A Red Cross Man Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCCCCCDA EEFFGGHHCCCCEE IICCJJKKCCCC LMNNOO

I've tinkered at my bits of rhymesA
In weary woeful waiting timesA
In doleful hours of battle dinB
Ere yet they brought the wounded inB
Through vigils of the fateful nightC
In lousy barns by candle lightC
In dug outs sagging and afloodC
On stretchers stiff and bleared with bloodC
By ragged grove by ruined roadC
By hearths accurst where Love abodeC
By broken altars blackened shrinesD
I've tinkered at my bits of rhymesA
-
I've solaced me with scraps of songE
The desolated ways alongE
Through sickly fields all shrapnel sownF
And meadows reaped by death aloneF
By blazing cross and splintered spireG
By headless Virgin in the mireG
By gardens gashed amid their bloomH
By gutted grave by shattered tombH
Beside the dying and the deadC
Where rocket green and rocket redC
In trembling pools of poising lightC
With flowers of flame festoon the nightC
Ah me by what dark ways of wrongE
I've cheered my heart with scraps of songE
-
So here's my sheaf of war won verseI
And some is bad and some is worseI
And if at times I curse a bitC
You needn't read that part of itC
For through it all like horror runsJ
The red resentment of the gunsJ
And you yourself would mutter whenK
You took the things that once were menK
And sped them through that zone of hateC
To where the dripping surgeons waitC
And wonder too if in God's sightC
War ever ever can be rightC
-
Yet may it not be crime and warL
But effort misdirected areM
And if there's good in war and crimeN
There may be in my bits of rhymeN
My songs from out the slaughter millO
So take or leave them as you willO
