The Greatest Writer of to dayA
With Maupassant I almost set himB
Said to me in a weary wayA
The last occasion that I met himB
Old chap this world is more and moreC
Becoming bourgeois blas eacute blousyD
Thank God I've lived so long beforeC
It got so definitely lousyD
-
Said I Old chap I don't agreeD
Why should one so dispraise the presentE
For gainful guys like you and meD
It still can be extremely pleasantE
Have we not Women Wine and SongF
A gleeful trio to my thinkingG
So blithely we can get alongF
With laughing loving eating drinkingG
-
Said he Dear Boy it may be soD
But I'm fed up with war and worryD
I would escape this world of woeD
Of wrath and wrong of hate and hurryD
I fain would gain the peace of mindH
Of Lamas on Thibetan highlandsD
Or maybe sanctuary findH
With beach combers on coral islandsD
-
Said I Dear Boy don't go so farI
Just live a life of simple beingG
Forgetting all the ills that areI
Be satisfied with hearing seeingG
The sense of smell and taste and touchJ
Can bring you bliss in ample measureK
If only you don't think too muchJ
Your programme can be packed with pleasureK
-
But do not try to probe belowD
This fairy film of Nature's screeningG
Look on it as a surface showD
Without a purpose of a meaningG
Take no account of social strifeL
And dread no coming cataclysmM
Let your philosophy of lifeL
Be what I call EXTERNALISMM
-
The moon shines down with borrowed lightN
So savants say I do not doubt itO
Suffice its silver trance my sightN
That's all I want to know about itO
A fig for science 'how' and 'why'D
Distract me in my happy dreamingG
Through line and form and colour IP
Am all content with outward seemingG
-
The Greatest Writer of to dayA
I would have loved to call him WillieD
looked wry at me and went his wayA
I think he thought me rather sillyD
Maybe I am but I insistQ
My point of view will take some beatingG
Don't mock this old ExternalistQ
The pudding's proof is in the eatingG
