Ernie Pyle Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFG GHGHII JKJKL

I wish I had a simple styleA
In writing verseB
As in his prose had Ernie PyleA
So true and terseB
Springing so forthright from the heartC
With guileless artC
-
I wish I could put back a dramD
As Ernie couldE
I wish that I could cuss and damnD
As soldier shouldE
And fain with every verse would IF
Ernie outvieG
-
Alas I cannot claim his highG
HumanityH
Nor emulate his pungent dryG
ProfanityH
Nor share his love of common folkI
Who bear life's yolkI
-
Oh Ernie who on earth I knewJ
In war and wineK
Though frail of fame in soul how youJ
Were pure and fineK
I'm proud that once when we were plasteredL
You called me 'bastard '-
