Dunce Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IJIJKLKL KMKNOPOQ

At school I never gained a prizeA
Proving myself the model assB
Yet how I watched the wistful eyesA
And cheered my mates who topped the classB
No envy in my heart I foundC
Yet bone was worthier to ownD
Those precious books in vellum boundC
Than I a dreamer and a droneD
-
No prize at school I ever gainedE
Shirking my studies I supposeF
Yes I remember being canedE
For lack of love of Latin proseF
For algebra I won no praiseG
In grammar I was far from brightH
Yet oh how Poetry would raiseG
In me a rapture of delightH
-
I never gained a prize at schoolI
The dullard's cap adorned my headJ
My masters wrote me down a foolI
And yet I'm sorry they are deadJ
I'd like to go to them and sayK
Yours is indeed a tricky tradeL
My honoured classmates where are theyK
Yet I the dunce brave books have madeL
-
Oh I am old and worn and greyK
And maybe have not long to liveM
Yet 'tis my hope at some Prize DayK
At my old school the Head will giveN
A tome or two of mine to crownO
Some pupil's well deserved successP
Proving a scapegrace and a clownO
May win at last to worthinessQ
