She said I am too old to playA
With dolls and put them all awayA
Into a box one rainy dayA
-
I think she must have felt some painB
She looked so long into the rainB
Then sighed I'll bring you out againC
-
For I'll have little children tooD
With sunny hair and eyes of blueD
And they will play and play with youD
-
And now good bye my pretty dearsE
There in the dark for years and yearsE
Dream of your little mother's tearsE
-
Eglantine Pierrot and Marie ClaireF
Topsy and Tiny and Teddy BearF
Side by side in the coffer thereF
-
Time went by one day she kneeledD
By a wooden Cross in Flanders FieldD
And wept for the One the earth concealedD
-
And made a vow she would never wedD
But always be true to the deathless deadD
Until the span of her life be spedD

-
More years went on and they made her wiseE
By sickness and pain and sacrificeE
With greying tresses and tired eyesE
-
And then one evening of weary rainB
She opened the old oak box againC
And her heart was clutched with an ancient painB
-
For there in the quiet dark they layA
Just as they were when she put them awayA
O but it seemed like yesterdayA
-
Topsy and Tiny and Teddy BearF
Eglantine Pierrot and Marie ClaireF
Ever so hopefully waiting thereF
-
But she looked at them through her blinding tearsE
And she said You've been patient my pretty dearsE
You've waited and waited all these yearsE
-
I've broken a promise I made so trueD
But my heart my darlings is broken tooD
No little Mothers have I for youD
-
My hands are withered my hair is greyA
Yet just for a moment I'll try to playA
With you as I did that long dead dayA
-
Ah no I cannot I try in vainB
I stare and I stare into the rainB
I'll put you back in your box againC
-
Bless you darlings perhaps one dayA
Some little Mother will find you and playA
And once again you'll be glad and gayA
-
But when in the friendly dark I lieH
No one will ever love you as IH
My little children good bye good byeH
