I could not shake the fellow off | F |
So let him shoulder my valise | G |
He tottered with a racking cough | H |
That did not give him any peace | G |
He lagged so limply in my wake | I |
I made him put the burden down | J |
Saying A taxi I will take | I |
And grimly gave him half a crown | J |
- | |
Poor devil I am sure he had | K |
Not eaten anything that day | L |
His eyes so hungrily were glad | K |
Although his lips were ashen grey | L |
He vanished in the callous crowd | M |
Then when he was no more around | N |

I wish I'd given him a pound | N |
- | |
And strangely I felt sore ashamed | O |
As if somehow I had lost face | G |
And not only myself I blamed | O |
But all the blasted human race | G |
And all this life of battle where | P |
The poor are beaten to their knees | G |
And while the weak the burdens bear | P |
Fat fools like me can stroll at ease | G |
