Contentment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EDEDFCFC GHGHIJIJ CHCHIHIH

An Ancient gaffer once I knewA
Who puffed a pipe and tossed a tankardB
He claimed a hundred years or twoA
And for a dozen more he hankeredB
So o er a pint I asked how heC
Had kept his timbers tight togetherD
He grinned and answered It maun beC
Because I likes all kinds o weatherD
-
Fore every morn when I get upE
I lights my clay pipe wi a cinderD
And as me mug o tea I supE
I looks from out the cottage winderD
And if it s shade or if it s shineF
Or wind or snow befit to freeze meC
I always say Well now that s fineF
It s just the sorto day to please meC
-
For I have found it wise in lifeG
To take the luck the way it s comingH
A wake a worry or a wifeG
Just carry on and keep a hummingH
And so I lights me pipe o clayI
And through the morn on blizzard bordersJ
I chuckle in me guts and sayI
It s just the day the doctor ordersJ
-
A mighty good philosophyC
Thought I and leads to longer livingH
To make the best of things that beC
And take the weather of God s givingH
So though the sky be ashen greyI
And winds be edged and sleet be slantingH
Heap faggots on the fire and sayI
It s just the kind of day I m wantingH
