Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EDEDFCFC GHGHIJIJ CHCHIHIHAn Ancient gaffer once I knew | A |
Who puffed a pipe and tossed a tankard | B |
He claimed a hundred years or two | A |
And for a dozen more he hankered | B |
So o er a pint I asked how he | C |
Had kept his timbers tight together | D |
He grinned and answered It maun be | C |
Because I likes all kinds o weather | D |
- | |
Fore every morn when I get up | E |
I lights my clay pipe wi a cinder | D |
And as me mug o tea I sup | E |
I looks from out the cottage winder | D |
And if it s shade or if it s shine | F |
Or wind or snow befit to freeze me | C |
I always say Well now that s fine | F |
It s just the sorto day to please me | C |
- | |
For I have found it wise in life | G |
To take the luck the way it s coming | H |
A wake a worry or a wife | G |
Just carry on and keep a humming | H |
And so I lights me pipe o clay | I |
And through the morn on blizzard borders | J |
I chuckle in me guts and say | I |
It s just the day the doctor orders | J |
- | |
A mighty good philosophy | C |
Thought I and leads to longer living | H |
To make the best of things that be | C |
And take the weather of God s giving | H |
So though the sky be ashen grey | I |
And winds be edged and sleet be slanting | H |
Heap faggots on the fire and say | I |
It s just the kind of day I m wanting | H |
