| You'll find there's good in every ill | B |

| We called him Compensation Pete | D |

| He lost his wealth but was he pipped | D |
| Why no That's fine he used to say | E |
| I've got the government plumb gypped | D |
| No more damn income tax to pay | E |
| From cares of property set free | F |
| And with no pesky social ties | G |
| Why even poverty may be | F |
| A benediction in disguise | G |

| I'm getting on may be the best | D |
| I've always loved to lie abed | D |
| And now I have the right to rest | D |
| Such heaps o' things I want to do | D |
| I'll have no time to fret or brood | D |
| I'll read the dam ol' Bible through | D |
| Guess it'll do me plenty good | D |

| He has that line of sunny shine | H |
| That makes a blessing of a curse | I |
| And he would say Don't let's repine | H |
| Though things are bad they might be worse | I |
| And so he cherished to the end | D |
| Philosophy so sane and sweet | D |
| That everybody was his friend | D |
| With optimism hard to beat | D |
