They must not wed the Doctor saidA
For they were far from strongB
And children of their marriage bedA
Might not live overlongB
And yet each eve I saw them passC
With rapt and eager airD
As fit a seeming lad and lassC
As ought to pairD
-
For twenty years I went awayE
And scoured the China SeaF
Then homing came and found that theyE
Were still sweet companyF
The Doctor and the Priest had bannedG
Three times their wedding tiesH
Yet they were walking hand in handG
Love in their eyesH
-
And then I went away againI
For years another scoreJ
And sailored all the Spanish MainK
Ere I returned once moreJ
And now I see them pass my gateL
So slow and stooped and greyE
And when I asked them Why not mateL
We do they sayE
-
No priest and village bells we needM
No Doctor to approveN
The Lord has wedded us indeedM
With everlasting loveO
How wonderful to understandG
The working of His willP
Lo We are walking hand in handG
And sweethearts stillP
