For they were far from strong | B |
And children of their marriage bed | A |
Might not live overlong | B |
And yet each eve I saw them pass | C |
With rapt and eager air | D |
As fit a seeming lad and lass | C |
As ought to pair | D |

For twenty years I went away | E |
And scoured the China Sea | F |
Then homing came and found that they | E |
Were still sweet company | F |
The Doctor and the Priest had banned | G |
Three times their wedding ties | H |
Yet they were walking hand in hand | G |
Love in their eyes | H |

And then I went away again | I |
For years another score | J |
And sailored all the Spanish Main | K |
Ere I returned once more | J |
And now I see them pass my gate | L |
So slow and stooped and grey | E |
And when I asked them Why not mate | L |
We do they say | E |

No priest and village bells we need | M |
No Doctor to approve | N |
The Lord has wedded us indeed | M |
With everlasting love | O |
How wonderful to understand | G |
The working of His will | P |
Lo We are walking hand in hand | G |
And sweethearts still | P |
