Artist Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDED FGFGHIHI IJIJIKIK AIAILMLM| He gave a picture exhibition | A |
| Hiring a little empty shop | B |
| Above its window FREE ADMISSION | A |
| Cajoled the passers by to stop | B |
| Just to admire no need to purchase | C |
| Although his price might have been low | D |
| But no proud artist ever urges | E |
| Potential buyers at his show | D |
| - | |
| Of course he badly needed money | F |
| But more he needed moral aid | G |
| Some people thought his pictures funny | F |
| Too ultra modern I'm afraid | G |
| His painting was experimental | H |
| Which no poor artist can afford | I |
| That is if he would pay the rental | H |
| And guarantee his roof and board | I |
| - | |
| And so some came and saw and sniggered | I |
| And some a puzzled brow would crease | J |
| And some objected Well I'm jiggered | I |
| What price Picasso and Matisse | J |
| The artist sensitively quivered | I |
| And stifled many a bitter sigh | K |
| But day by day his hopes were shivered | I |
| For no one ever sought to buy | K |
| - | |
| And then he had a brilliant notion | A |
| Half of his daubs he labeled SOLD | I |
| And lo he viewed with queer emotion | A |
| A public keen and far from cold | I |
| Then strange it is beyond the telling | L |
| He saw the people round him press | M |
| His paintings went they still are selling | L |
| Well nothing succeeds like success | M |
