Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEECCFFGGHHII JJKKLLMMNNOOPPQQRSAnd what of home how goes it boys | A |
While we die here in stench and noise | A |
The hill stands up and hedges wind | B |
Over the crest and drop behind | B |
Here swallows dip and wild things go | C |
On peaceful errands to and fro | C |
Across the sloping meadow floor | D |
And make no guess at blasting war | D |
In woods that fledge the round hill shoulder | E |
Leaves shoot and open fall and moulder | E |
And shoot again Meadows yet show | C |
Alternate white of drifted snow | C |
And daisies Children play at shop | F |
Warm days on the flat boulder top | F |
With wildflower coinage and the wares | G |
Are bits of glass and unripe pears | G |
Crows perch upon the backs of sheep | H |
The wheat goes yellow women reap | H |
Autumn winds ruffle brook and pond | I |
Flutter the hedge and fly beyond | I |
So the first things of nature run | J |
And stand not still for any one | J |
Contemptuous of the distant cry | K |
Wherewith you harrow earth and sky | K |
And high French clouds praying to be | L |
Back back in peace beyond the sea | L |
Where nature with accustomed round | M |
Sweeps and garnishes the ground | M |
With kindly beauty warm or cold | N |
Alternate seasons never old | N |
Heathen how furiously you rage | O |
Cursing this blood and brimstone age | O |
How furiously against your will | P |
You kill and kill again and kill | P |
All thought of peace behind you cast | Q |
Till like small boys with fear aghast | Q |
Each cries for God to understand | R |
'I could not help it it was my hand ' | S |
