In spite of all the learn'd have saidA
I still my old opinion keepB
The posture that we give the deadA
Points out the soul's eternal sleepB
-
Not so the ancients of these landsC
The Indian when from life releas'dD
Again is seated with his friendsE
And shares gain the joyous feastD
-
His imag'd birds and painted bowlF
And ven'son for a journey dress'dG
Bespeak the nature of the soulF
Activity that knows no restG
-
His bow for action ready bentH
And arrows with a head of stoneI
Can only mean that life is spentH
And not the finer essence goneJ
-
Thou stranger that shalt come this wayK
No fraud upon the dead commitL
Observe the swelling turf and sayK
They do not lie but here they sitL
-
Here still lofty rock remainsM
On which the curious eye may traceN
Now wasted half by wearing rainsM
The fancies of a older raceN
-
Here still an aged elm aspiresO
Beneath whose far projecting shadeP
And which the shepherd still admiresQ
The children of the forest play'dP
-
There oft a restless Indian queenR
Pale Shebah with her braided hairS
And many a barbarous form is seenR
To chide the man that lingers thereS
-
By midnight moons o'er moistening dewsT
In habit for the chase array'dP
The hunter still the deer pursuesT
The hunter and the deer a shadeP
-
And long shall timorous fancy seeU
The painted chief and pointed spearV
And reason's self shall bow the kneeU
To shadows and delusions hereW
