O stony grey soil of MonaghanA
The laugh from my love you thievedB
You took the gay child of my passionC
And gave me your clod conceivedB
-
You clogged the feet of my boyhoodB
And I believed that my stumbleD
Had the poise and stride of ApolloE
And his voice my thick tongued mumbleD
-
You told me the plough was immortalD
O green life conquering ploughF
The mandril stained your coulter bluntedB
In the smooth lea field of my browF
-
You sang on steaming dunghillsG
A song of cowards' broodB
You perfumed my clothes with weasel itchH
You fed me on swinish foodB
-
You flung a ditch on my visionC
Of beauty love and truthI
O stony grey soil of MonaghanA
You burgled my bank of youthI
-
Lost the long hours of pleasureJ
All the women that love young menK
O can I stilll stroke the monster's backL
Or write with unpoisoned penK
-
His name in these lonely versesG
Or mention the dark fields whereM
The first gay flight of my lyricN
Got caught in a peasant's prayerM
-
Mullahinsa Drummeril Black ShancoN
Wherever I turn I seeG
In the stony grey soil of MonaghanA
Dead loves that were born for meG
