I'm twenty two I'm twenty twoA
They gaily give me joyB
As if I should be glad to hearC
That I was less a boyB
They do not know how carelesslyD
Their words have given painE
To one whose heart would leap to beD
A happy boy againF
-
I had a light and careless heartG
When this brief year beganH
And then I pray'd that I might beD
A grave and perfect manH
The world was like a blessed dreamI
Of joyous coming yearsJ
I did not know its manlinessJ
Was but to wake in tearsJ
-
A change has on my spirit comeK
I am forever sadL
The light has all departed nowM
My early feelings hadL
I used to love the morning greyN
The twilight's quiet deepO
But now like shadows on the seaJ
Upon my thoughts they creepO
-
And love was like a holy starP
When this brief year was youngQ
And my whole worship of the skyR
On one sweet ray was flungQ
But worldly things have come betweenS
And shut it from my sightT
And though the star shines purely yetU
I mourn its hidden lightT
-
And fame I bent to it the kneeJ
And bow'd to it my browM
And it is like a coal uponV
My living spirit nowM
But when I pray'd for burning fireW
To touch the soul I bow'dX
I did not know the lightning flashY
Would come in such a cloudX
-
Ye give me joy Is it becauseJ
Another year has fledZ
That I am farther from my youthA2
And nearer to the deadZ
Is it because my cares have comeK
My happy boyhood o'erW
Because the visions I have lov'dB2
Will visit me no moreC2
-
Oh tell me not that ye are gladL
I cannot smile it backD2
I've found no flower and seen no lightT
On manhood's weary trackD2
My love is deep ambition deepO
And heart and mind will onV
But love is fainting by the wayN
And fame consumes ere wonE2
