There's something in a noble boyA
A brave free hearted careless oneB
With his unchecked unbidden joyA
His dread of books and love of funB
And in his clear and ready smileC
Unshaded by a thought of guileC
And unrepressed by sadnessD
Which brings me to my childhood backE
As if I trod its very trackE
And felt its very gladnessD
And yet it is not in his playF
When every trace of thought is lostG
And not when you would call him gayF
That his bright presence thrills me mostH
His shout may ring upon the hillI
His voice be echoed in the hallJ
His merry laugh like music trillI
And I unheeding hear it allJ
For like the wrinkles on my browK
I scarcely notice such things nowK
But when amid the earnest gameL
He stops as if he music heardM
And heedless of his shouted nameL
As of the carol of a birdM
Stands gazing on the empty airN
As if some dream were passing thereN
'T is then that on his face I lookO
His beautiful but thoughtful faceD
And like a long forgotten bookO
Its sweet familiar meaning traceD
Remembering a thousand thingsD
Which passed me on those golden wingsD
Which time has fettered nowK
Things that came o'er me with a thrillI
And left me silent sad and stillI
And threw upon my browK
A holier and a gentler castP
That was too innocent to lastP
'T is strange how thought upon a childQ
Will like a presence sometime pressD
And when his pulse is beating wildQ
And life itself is in excessD
When foot and hand and ear and eyeR
Are all with ardor straining highR
How in his heart will springS
A feeling whose mysterious thrallJ
Is stronger sweeter far than allJ
And on its silent wingS
How with the clouds he'll float awayF
As wandering and as lost as theyF
