They said that I was strange I could not bearA
Confinement and I lov'd to feel the windB
Blowing upon my forehead and when mornC
Came like an inspiration from the EastD
And the cool earth awaking like a starE
In a new element sent out its voiceF
And tempted me with music and the breathG
Of a delicious perfume and the dyeH
Of the rich forests and the pastures greenI
To come out and be glad I would not stayJ
To bind my gushing spirit with a bookK
-
Fourteen bright summers and my heart had grownL
Impatient in its loneliness and yearn'dM
For something that was like itself to loveN
She came the stately Isabel as proudO
And beautiful and gentle as my dreamP
And with my wealth of feeling lov'd I herQ
Older by years and wiser of the worldR
She was in thought my equal and we rang'dS
The pleasant wood together and sat downT
Impassion'd with the same delicious sweepU
Of water and I pour'd into her earV
My passion and my hoarded thoughts like oneW
Till I forgot that there was any worldR
But Isabel and nature She was pleas'dX
And flatter'd with my wild and earnest loveN
And suffer'd my delirious words to burnY
Upon my lip unchided It was newZ
To be so worshipped like a deityA2
By a pure heart from nature and she gaveB2
Her tenderness its way and when I kiss'dC2
Her fingers till I thought I was in HeavenW
She gaz'd upon me silently and weptD2

I have seen eighteen summers and the childE2
Of stately Isabel hath learn'd to comeF2
And win me from my sadness I have school'dG2
My feelings to affection for that childE2
And I can see his father fondle himH2
And give him to his mother with a kissI2
Upon her holy forehead and be calmJ2
