Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIIJK LMDDNN OOBBPPThey ere he left them had attain'd their prime | A |
And were less alter'd by the hand of Time | A |
But the slim youth no longer met their view | B |
Fair as the fancy e'er a seraph drew | B |
Who still upborne by joy in smiles was found | C |
With step elate that scarcely press'd the ground | C |
Before a grief had raz'd his youthful breast | D |
Or care had robb'd his brilliant eyes of rest | D |
When lofty visions swam before his sight | E |
And dreams of empire wrapt his soul at night | E |
Whose hair luxuriant flow'd in glossy pride | F |
And from his snowy forehead wav'd aside | F |
Which vein'd with purest azure rose serene | G |
And threw complacence o'er a rapturous mien | G |
The wandering light that sparkled in his eye | H |
The rounding lip of liveliest crimson dye | H |
The speaking form by each emotion sway'd | I |
The voice that softest music had convey'd | I |
Were now matur'd No more the child they saw | J |
But one with majesty inspiring awe | K |
Whose silken locks no more in ringlets flow | L |
But gold and purple bind his manly brow | M |
No more the envied robe his limbs invest | D |
In all the pomp of eastern monarchs drest | D |
The sun of Egypt had embrown'd his face | N |
And time had ripen'd every youthful grace | N |
- | |
As when the morn in vivid colours gay | O |
And tender beauty flies to meet the day | O |
Her lively tints lose their primeval hue | B |
The white and saffron mingle with the blue | B |
A glowing blush o'er the whole ether reigns | P |
But not a cloud its genuine tint retains | P |
