Breathing the violet scented galeA
Near to a river's limpid sourceB
Which through a wide extended valeA
Wound slowly on its sleeping courseB
-
Attended by a youthful pairC
With rubied lip and roving eyeD
Oft would fair Editha repairC
And let her children wander nighD
-
There pleas'd behold their footsteps turnE
To each new object in their wayF
Their ringlets glittering in the sunG
Their faces careless blythe and gayF
-
Once when they drest their flaxen hairC
With flow'rets wild of various hueH
And with a proud exulting airC
To their delighted parent drewH
-
Ah thus may every day ariseI
And pleasure thus your hearts pervadeJ
The widow'd mother fondly criesI
Before the youthful blossoms fadeJ
-
My sighs are all dispers'd in airC
Resign'd to fate I weep no moreK
Your welfare now is all my careC
Yet am I constant as beforeK
-
The world because a vermil bloomL
Tinges my yet unfading cheekM
Says I forget my William's tombL
A new and earthly love to seekM
-
Because I join the social trainN
With lip that wears a kindred smileO
And a gay sonnet's lively strainN
Does oft the lonely hour beguileO
-
Because no longer now I mournP
With sweeping robes of sable hueH
No more I clasp the marble urnE
Or vainly bid the world adieuH
-
Ah ill my secret soul they knowQ
Where my lost hero still remainsR
Where memory makes my bosom glowQ
And binds me still in closer chainsR
-
Whoe'er hath seen my William's formS
Heighten'd with every martial graceT
The ever varying unknown charmU
Wich beam'd in his expressive faceT
-
Or heard his fine ideas tryD
In Fancy's fairy garb to teachV
While the sweet language of his eyeD
Excell'd the eloquence of speechV
-
Could ne'er suppose my faith would failA
Or aught again this heart enslaveW
That absence would o'er love prevailA
Or hope be bounded by the graveW
-
Could all but I his merit knowQ
His wit and talents seeX
And is his name by all belowQ
Remember'd but by meX
-
No ne'er will I the memory loseY
Though from my sight thy form is flownZ
Of tenderness for other's woesA2
And noble firmness in thy ownZ
-
No slavish fear thy soul deprestH
Of Death or his attendant trainN
For in thy pure and spotless breastH
The fear of heav'n did only reignN
-
Thus when the still unsated wavesB2
Spread o'er thy head their whelming armsC2
When horrid darkness reign'd aroundH
And lightnings flash'd their dire alarmsC2
-
When wing'd with death each moment flewH
And blood the foaming ocean stain'dH
Thy courage cool consistent trueH
Its native energy maintain'dH
-
And when the fatal moment cameD2
The bullet enter'd in thy sideH
Only thy spirit's beauteous frameD2
Its prisoner flying droop'd and diedH
-
This is it that consoles my mindH
Which to my love aspiring fliesI
And makes me hope in future daysE2
To hail my William in the skiesI
-
Should tears from my pale eyelids stealF2
I teach my children's how to flowQ
And make their little bosoms feelF2
Before their time the touch of woeQ
-
I will not weep the world shall seeX
That I a nobler tribute payF
More grateful both to heaven and theeX
By guiding them in virtue's wayF
-
Embracing then her fondest caresG2
She cast her raptur'd eyes aboveH2
And breath'd to heav'n emphatic pray'rsG2
Of mingled reverence and loveH2
