The sins of Youth are hardly sinsA
So frank they are and freeB
'T is but when Middle age beginsA
We need moralityB
-
Ah pause and weigh this bitter truthC
That Middle age grown coldD
No comprehension has of YouthC
No pity for the OldD
-
Youth with his half divine mistakesE
She never can forgiveF
So much she hates his charm which makesE
Worth while the life we liveG
-
She scorns Old Age whose toleranceH
And calm well balanced mindI
Knowing how crime is born of chanceJ
Can pardon all mankindI
-
Yet she alas has all the powerK
Of strength and place and goldD
Man's every act through every hourK
Is by her laws controlledD
-
All things she grasps with sordid handsL
And weighs in tarnished scalesM
She neither feels nor understandsL
And yet her will prevailsM
-
Cold blooded vice and careful sinN
Gold lust blind selfishnessO
The shortest cheapest way to winN
Some worse than cheap successP
-
Such are her attributes and aimsQ
Yet meekly we obeyR
While she to guide and order claimsQ
All issues of the dayR
-
You seek for honour friendship truthC
Let Middle age be bannedS
Go for warm hearted acts to YouthC
To Age to understandS
