| I looked and saw under the moon's cold sheet | C |
| your delicate dry breasts country that built my heart | D |
| and the small trees on their uncoloured slope | E |
| like poetry moved articulate and sharp | F |
| and purposeful under the great dry flight of air | G |
| under the crosswise currents of wind and star | H |
| Clench down your strength box tree and ironbark | I |
| Break with your violent root the virgin rock | I |
| Draw from the flying dark its breath of dew | J |
| till the unliving come to life in you | J |
| Be over the blind rock a skin of sense | K |
| under the barren height a slender dance | L |
| I woke and saw the dark small trees that burn | M |
| suddenly into flowers more lovely that the white moon | A |
