The Old Prison Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB ADDD EFGF HAIA JKLK

The rows of cells are unroofedA
a flute for the wind's mouthB
who comes with a breath of iceC
from the blue caves of the southB
-
O dark and fierce dayA
the wind like an angry beeD
hunts for the black honeyD
in the pits of the hollow seaD
-
Waves of shadow washE
the empty shell bone bareF
and like a bone it singsG
a bitter song of airF
-
Who built and laboured hereH
The wind and the sea sayA
Their cold nest is brokenI
and they are blown awayA
-
They did not breed nor loveJ
each in his cell aloneK
cried as the wind now criesL
through this flute of stoneK
