Legend Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDBABECA FGHDGFGHF IDJKDIDI JLMFLJLMJ NJDJNJON

The blacksmith's boy went out with a rifleA
and a black dog running behindB
Cobwebs snatched at his feetC
rivers hindered himD
thorn branches caught at his eyes to make him blindB
and the sky turned into an unlucky opalA
but he didn't mindB
I can break branches I can swim rivers I can stare outE
any spider I meetC
said he to his dog and his rifleA
-
The blacksmith's boy went over the paddocksF
with his old black hat on his headG
Mountains jumped in his wayH
rocks rolled down on himD
and the old crow cried You'll soon be deadG
And the rain came down like mattocksF
But he only saidG
I can climb mountains I can dodge rocks I can shoot an old crow any dayH
and he went on over the paddocksF
-
When he came to the end of the day the sun began fallingI
Up came the night ready to swallow himD
like the barrel of a gunJ
like an old black hatK
like a black dog hungry to follow himD
Then the pigeon the magpie and the dove began wailingI
and the grass lay down to pillow himD
His rifle broke his hat blew away and his dog was gone and the sun was fallingI
-
But in front of the night the rainbow stood on the mountainJ
just as his heart foretoldL
He ran like a hareM
he climbed like a foxF
he caught it in his hands the colours and the coldL
like a bar of ice like the column of a fountainJ
like a ring of goldL
The pigeon the magpie and the dove flew up to stareM
and the grass stood up again on the mountainJ
-
The blacksmith's boy hung the rainbow on his shoulderN
instead of his broken gunJ
Lizards ran out to see snakes made way for himD
and the rainbow shone as brightly as the sunJ
All the world said Nobody is braver nobody is bolderN
nobody else has doneJ
anything equal to it He went home as easy as could beO
with the swinging rainbow on his shoulderN
