Legend Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDBABECA FGHDGFGHF IDJKDIDI JLMFLJLMJ NJDJNJONThe blacksmith's boy went out with a rifle | A |
and a black dog running behind | B |
Cobwebs snatched at his feet | C |
rivers hindered him | D |
thorn branches caught at his eyes to make him blind | B |
and the sky turned into an unlucky opal | A |
but he didn't mind | B |
I can break branches I can swim rivers I can stare out | E |
any spider I meet | C |
said he to his dog and his rifle | A |
- | |
The blacksmith's boy went over the paddocks | F |
with his old black hat on his head | G |
Mountains jumped in his way | H |
rocks rolled down on him | D |
and the old crow cried You'll soon be dead | G |
And the rain came down like mattocks | F |
But he only said | G |
I can climb mountains I can dodge rocks I can shoot an old crow any day | H |
and he went on over the paddocks | F |
- | |
When he came to the end of the day the sun began falling | I |
Up came the night ready to swallow him | D |
like the barrel of a gun | J |
like an old black hat | K |
like a black dog hungry to follow him | D |
Then the pigeon the magpie and the dove began wailing | I |
and the grass lay down to pillow him | D |
His rifle broke his hat blew away and his dog was gone and the sun was falling | I |
- | |
But in front of the night the rainbow stood on the mountain | J |
just as his heart foretold | L |
He ran like a hare | M |
he climbed like a fox | F |
he caught it in his hands the colours and the cold | L |
like a bar of ice like the column of a fountain | J |
like a ring of gold | L |
The pigeon the magpie and the dove flew up to stare | M |
and the grass stood up again on the mountain | J |
- | |
The blacksmith's boy hung the rainbow on his shoulder | N |
instead of his broken gun | J |
Lizards ran out to see snakes made way for him | D |
and the rainbow shone as brightly as the sun | J |
All the world said Nobody is braver nobody is bolder | N |
nobody else has done | J |
anything equal to it He went home as easy as could be | O |
with the swinging rainbow on his shoulder | N |
