O PEOPLE CHOSEN are ye notA
Likewise the chosen of the LordB
To do His will and speak His wordC
From the loud thunder storm of warD
Not man alone hath called ye forthE
But He the God of all the earthF
The torch of vengeance in your handsG
He quenches unto Him belongsH
The solemn recompense of wrongsH
Enough of blood the land has seenI
And not by cell or gallows stairJ
Shall ye the way of God prepareJ
Say to the pardon seekers KeepK
Your manhood bend no suppliant kneesL
Nor palter with unworthy pleasL
Above your voices sounds the wailM
Of starving men we shut in vainN
Our eyes to Pillow's ghastly stainN
What words can drown that bitter cryO
What tears wash out the stain of deathP
What oaths confirm your broken faithQ
From you alone the guarantyR
Of union freedom peace we claimS
We urge no conqueror's terms of shameS
Alas no victor's pride is oursT
We bend above our triumphs wonU
Like David o'er his rebel sonU
Be men not beggars Cancel allV
By one brave generous action trustW
Your better instincts and be justW
Make all men peers before the lawX
Take hands from off the negro's throatY
Give black and white an equal voteY
Keep all your forfeit lives and landsG
But give the common law's redressZ
To labor's utter nakednessZ
Revive the old heroic willA2
Be in the right as brave and strongB2
As ye have proved yourselves in wrongB2
Defeat shall then be victoryR
Your loss the wealth of full amendsZ
And hate be love and foes be friendsZ
Then buried be the dreadful pastC2
Its common slain be mourned and letD2
All memories soften to regretD2
Then shall the Union's mother heartE2
Her lost and wandering ones recallV
Forgiving and restoring allV
And Freedom break her marble tranceZ
Above the Capitolian domeF2
Stretch hands and bid ye welcome homeF2
