Written In Northampton County Asylum Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACBD EFEFGG HIHIJJ

I am yet what I am who cares or knowsA
My friends forsake me like a memory lostB
I am the self consumer of my woesA
They rise and vanish an oblivious hostC
Shadows of life whose very soul is lostB
And yet I am I live though I am toss dD
-
Into the nothingness of scorn and noiseE
Into the living sea of waking dreamF
Where there is neither sense of life nor joysE
But the huge shipwreck of my own esteemF
And all that s dear Even those I loved the bestG
Are strange nay they are stranger than the restG
-
I long for scenes where man has never trodH
For scenes where woman never smiled or weptI
There to abide with my Creator GodH
And sleep as I in childhood sweetly sleptI
Full of high thoughts unborn So let me lieJ
The grass below above the vaulted skyJ
