Sweet tiny flower of darkly hueA
Lone dweller in the pathless shadeB
How much I love thy pensive blueA
Of innocence so well display'dB

What time the watery skies are fullC
Of streaming dappled clouds so paleD
And sideling rocks more white than woolC
Portending snowy sleet or hailD

I 'gin to seek thy charming flowerE
Along each hedge row's mossy seatF
Where dithering many a cold bleak hourE
I've hugg'd myself in thy retreatF

What makes me cherish such fond tasteG
What makes such raptures spring for theeH
Is that thou lov'st the dreary wasteG
Which is so well belov'd by meH

For solitude should be my choiceI
Could I this labouring life resignJ
To see the little birds rejoiceI
And thy sweet flowers in clusters shineJ

I'd choose a cave beside some rockK
Clos'd in all round with ash and thornL
That near my door thy tribe might flockK
To shed their sweets in early mornL
-
But ah that way would never proveM
Means to sustain impending lifeN
I must forego those scenes I loveO
And still beat on with needy strifeN
-
Sweet flower we must reverse the planP
Nor cherish such romantic viewsQ
I'll strive to seek thee when I canP
Through noontide heat or evening dewsQ
-
To spring return with all thy trainR
Of flowrets cloth'd in varied hueA
I long to see that morn againS
Which brings to light the violet blueA
