The Wanton Chloe--a Pastoral Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCE CFCFCGCG HIHIJKJK LILIMCMC

Young Chloe looks sweet as the roseA
And her love might be reckoned no lessB
But her bosom so freely bestowsA
That all may a portion possessB
Her smiles would be cheering to seeC
But so freely they're lavished abroadD
That each silly swain like to meC
Can boast what the wanton bestowedE
-
Her looks and her kisses so freeC
Are for all like the rain and the skyF
As the blossom love is to the beeC
Each swain is as welcome as IF
And though I my folly can seeC
Yet still must I love and adoreG
Though I know the love whispered to meC
Has been told to so many beforeG
-
'T is sad that a bosom so fairH
And soft lips so seemingly sweetI
Should study false ways to ensnareH
And breathe in their kisses deceitI
But beauty's no guide to the bestJ
The rose that out blushes the mornK
While it tempts the glad eye to its breastJ
Will pierce the fond hand with a thornK
-
Yet still must I love silly swainL
And put up with all her deceitI
And try to be jealous in vainL
For I cannot help thinking her sweetI
I see other swains in her bowerM
And I sigh and excuse what I seeC
While I say to myself Is the flowerM
Any worse when it's kissed by the beeC
