The Shepherd's Tree Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFEGHGHII

Huge elm with rifted trunk all notched and scarredA
Like to a warrior's destiny I loveB
To stretch me often on thy shadowed swardC
And hear the laugh of summer leaves aboveB
Or on thy buttressed roots to sit and leanD
In careless attitude and there reflectE
On times and deeds and darings that have beenF
Old castaways now swallowed in neglectE
While thou art towering in thy strength of heartG
Stirring the soul to vain imaginingsH
In which life's sordid being hath no partG
The wind of that eternal ditty singsH
Humming of future things that burn the mindI
To leave some fragment of itself behindI
