The Fox Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGG HHIIJJHHAACCHH

The shepherd on his journey heard when nighA
His dog among the bushes barking highA
The ploughman ran and gave a hearty shoutB
He found a weary fox and beat him outB
The ploughman laughed and would have ploughed him inC
But the old shepherd took him for the skinC
He lay upon the furrow stretched for deadD
The old dog lay and licked the wounds that bledD
The ploughman beat him till his ribs would crackE
And then the shepherd slung him at his backE
And when he rested to his dog's surpriseF
The old fox started from his dead disguiseF
And while the dog lay panting in the sedgeG
He up and snapt and bolted through the hedgeG
-
He scampered to the bushes far awayH
The shepherd called the ploughman to the frayH
The ploughman wished he had a gun to shootI
The old dog barked and followed the pursuitI
The shepherd threw his hook and tottered pastJ
The ploughman ran but none could go so fastJ
The woodman threw his faggot from the wayH
And ceased to chop and wondered at the frayH
But when he saw the dog and heard the cryA
He threw his hatchet but the fox was byeA
The shepherd broke his hook and lost the skinC
He found a badger hole and bolted inC
They tried to dig but safe from danger's wayH
He lived to chase the hounds another dayH
