He lay upon the furrow stretched for dead | D |
The old dog lay and licked the wounds that bled | D |
The ploughman beat him till his ribs would crack | E |
And then the shepherd slung him at his back | E |
And when he rested to his dog's surprise | F |

And while the dog lay panting in the sedge | G |
He up and snapt and bolted through the hedge | G |

But when he saw the dog and heard the cry | A |
He threw his hatchet but the fox was bye | A |
The shepherd broke his hook and lost the skin | C |
He found a badger hole and bolted in | C |
They tried to dig but safe from danger's way | H |
He lived to chase the hounds another day | H |
