Old elm that murmured in our chimney topA
The sweetest anthem autumn ever madeB
And into mellow whispering calms would dropA
When showers fell on thy many coloured shadeB
And when dark tempests mimic thunder madeB
While darkness came as it would strangle lightC
With the black tempest of a winter nightC
That rocked thee like a cradle in thy rootD
How did I love to hear the winds upbraidB
Thy strength without while all within was muteD
It seasoned comfort to our hearts' desireE
We felt that kind protection like a friendF
And edged our chairs up closer to the fireE
Enjoying comfort that was never pennedF
Old favourite tree thou'st seen time's changes lowerE
Though change till now did never injure theeG
For time beheld thee as her sacred dowerH
And nature claimed thee her domestic treeG
Storms came and shook thee many a weary hourE
Yet stedfast to thy home thy roots have beenI
Summers of thirst parched round thy homely bowerE
Till earth grew iron still thy leaves were greenJ
The children sought thee in thy summer shadeB
And made their playhouse rings of stick and stoneK
The mavis sang and felt himself aloneK
While in thy leaves his early nest was madeB
And I did feel his happiness mine ownK
Nought heeding that our friendship was betrayedB
Friend not inanimate though stocks and stonesL
There are and many formed of flesh and bonesL
Thou owned a language by which hearts are stirredM
Deeper than by a feeling clothed in wordM
And speakest now what's known of every tongueN
Language of pity and the force of wrongO
What cant assumes what hypocrites will dareP
Speaks home to truth and shows it what they areQ
I see a picture which thy fate displaysR
And learn a lesson from thy destinyG
Self interest saw thee stand in freedom's waysR
So thy old shadow must a tyrant beG
Thou'st heard the knave abusing those in powerE
Bawl freedom loud and then oppress the freeG
Thou'st sheltered hypocrites in many a showerE
That when in power would never shelter theeG
Thou'st heard the knave supply his canting powersS
With wrong's illusions when he wanted friendsT
That bawled for shelter when he lived in showersS
And when clouds vanished made thy shade amendsT
With axe at root he felled thee to the groundU
And barked of freedom O I hate the soundU
Time hears its visions speak and age sublimeV
Hath made thee a disciple unto timeV
It grows the cant term of enslaving toolsW
To wrong another by the name of rightC
Thus came enclosure ruin was its guideX
But freedom's cottage soon was thrust asideX
And workhouse prisons raised upon the siteC
Een nature's dwellings far away from menY
The common heath became the spoiler's preyZ
The rabbit had not where to make his denY
And labour's only cow was drove awayZ
No matter wrong was right and right was wrongO
And freedom's bawl was sanction to the songO
Such was thy ruin music making elmA2
The right of freedom was to injure thineB2
As thou wert served so would they overwhelmA2
In freedom's name the little that is mineB2
And there are knaves that brawl for better lawsC2
And cant of tyranny in stronger powerE
Who glut their vile unsatiated mawsC2
And freedom's birthright from the weak devourE

Write your comment about The Fallen Elm poem by John Clare

Lucia Haynes: Very moving and if you read it every day would be fair comment. I have only discovered this poem today and wish it had been in my old school poetry books. Being 72 years old, poetry was part of education mainly before age 11. Radio 4 mentioned The Fallen Elm by John Clare this morning.
