The Dying Child Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABA CDCDC DEDED FGFGF HIHIH ECECC

He could not die when trees were greenA
For he loved the time too wellB
His little hands when flowers were seenA
Were held for the bluebellB
As he was carried o'er the greenA
-
His eye glanced at the white nosed beeC
He knew those children of the springD
When he was well and on the leaC
He held one in his hands to singD
Which filled his heart with gleeC
-
Infants the children of the springD
How can an infant dieE
When butterflies are on the wingD
Green grass and such a skyE
How can they die at springD
-
He held his hands for daisies whiteF
And then for violets blueG
And took them all to bed at nightF
That in the green fields grewG
As childhood's sweet delightF
-
And then he shut his little eyesH
And flowers would notice notI
Birds' nests and eggs caused no surpriseH
He now no blossoms gotI
They met with plaintive sighsH
-
When winter came and blasts did sighE
And bare were plain and treeC
As he for ease in bed did lieE
His soul seemed with the freeC
He died so quietlyC
