He comes and hears they let the strongest loose | C |
The old fox hears the noise and drops the goose | C |
The poacher shoots and hurries from the cry | B |
And the old hare half wounded buzzes by | B |
They get a fork d stick to bear him down | D |
And clap the dogs and take him to the town | D |
And bait him all the day with many dogs | E |
And laugh and shout and fright the scampering hogs | E |
He runs along and bites at all he meets | F |
They shout and hollo down the noisy streets | F |
He turns about to face the loud uproar | G |
And drives the rebels to their very door | G |
The frequent stone is hurled wher'er they go | H |
When badgers fight then everyone's a foe | H |
The dogs are clapped and urged to join the fray | I |
The badger turns and drives them all away | I |
Though scarcely half as big demure and small | J |
He fights with dogs for hours and beats them all | J |
The heavy mastiff savage in the fray | I |
Lies down and licks his feet and turns away | I |
The bulldog knows his match and waxes cold | K |
The badger grins and never leaves his hold | K |
He drives the crowd and follows at their heels | L |
And bites them through the drunkard swears and reels | L |
The frighted women take the boys away | I |
The blackguard laughs and hurries on the fray | I |
He tries to reach the woods an awkward race | M |
But sticks and cudgels quickly stop the chase | M |
He turns again and drives the noisy crowd | N |
And beats the many dogs in noises loud | N |
He drives away and beats them every one | O |
And then they loose them all and set them on | P |
He falls as dead and kicked by boys and men | A |
Then starts and grins and drives the crowd again | A |
Till kicked and torn and beaten out he lies | Q |
And leaves his hold and cackles groans and dies | Q |
