Now swarthy Summer by rude health embrownedA
Precedence takes of rosy fingered SpringB
And laughing Joy with wild flowers prank'd and crown'dA
A wild and giddy thingB
And Health robust from every care unboundA
Come on the zephyr's wingB
And cheer the toiling clownC
-
Happy as holiday enjoying faceD
Loud tongued and merry as a marriage bellE
Thy lightsome step sheds joy in every placeD
And where the troubled dwellE
Thy witching charms wean them of half their caresF
And from thy sunny spellE
They greet joy unawaresF
-
Then with thy sultry locks all loose and rudeA
And mantle laced with gems of garish lightA
Come as of wont for I would fain intrudeA
And in the world's despiteA
Share the rude wealth that thy own heart beguilesF
If haply so I mightA
Win pleasure from thy smilesF
-
Me not the noise of brawling pleasure cheersF
In nightly revels or in city streetsF
But joys which soothe and not distract the earsF
That one at leisure meetsF
In the green woods and meadows summer shornG
Or fields where bee fly greetsF
The ear with mellow hornG
-
The green swathed grasshopper on treble pipeH
Sings there and dances in mad hearted pranksF
There bees go courting every flower that's ripeH
On baulks and sunny banksF
And droning dragon fly on rude bassoonI
Attempts to give God thanksF
In no discordant tuneI
-
The speckled thrush by self delight embuedA
There sings unto himself for joy's amendsF
And drinks the honey dew of solitudeA
There Happiness attendsF
With inbred Joy until the heart o'erflowE
Of which the world's rude friendsF
Nought heeding nothing knowJ
-
There the gay river laughing as it goesF
Plashes with easy wave its flaggy sidesF
And to the calm of heart in calmness showsF
What pleasure there abidesF
To trace its sedgy banks from trouble freeK
Spots Solitude providesF
To muse and happy beK
-
There ruminating 'neath some pleasant bushL
On sweet silk grass I stretch me at mine easeF
Where I can pillow on the yielding rushM
And acting as I pleaseF
Drop into pleasant dreams or musing lieE
Mark the wind shaken treesF
And cloud betravelled skyE
-
There think me how some barter joy for careN
And waste life's summer health in riot rudeA
Of nature nor of nature's sweets awareN
When passions vain intrudeA
These by calm musings softened are and stillE
And the heart's better moodA
Feels sick of doing illE
-
There I can live and at my leisure seekO
Joys far from cold restraints not fearing prideA
Free as the winds that breathe upon my cheekO
Rude health so long deniedA
Here poor Integrity can sit at easeF
And list self satisfiedA
The song of honey beesF
-
The green lane now I traverse where it goesF
Nought guessing till some sudden turn espiesF
Rude batter'd finger post that stooping showsF
Where the snug mystery liesF
And then a mossy spire with ivy crownC
Cheers up the short surpriseF
And shows a peeping townC
-
I see the wild flowers in their summer mornG
Of beauty feeding on joy's luscious hoursF
The gay convolvulus wreathing round the thornG
Agape for honey showersF
And slender kingcup burnished with the dewA
Of morning's early hoursF
Like gold yminted newA
-
And mark by rustic bridge o'er shallow streamP
Cow tending boy to toil unreconciledA
Absorbed as in some vagrant summer dreamP
Who now in gestures wildA
Starts dancing to his shadow on the wallE
Feeling self gratifiedA
Nor fearing human thrallE
-
Or thread the sunny valley laced with streamsF
Or forests rude and the o'ershadow'd brimsF
Of simple ponds where idle shepherd dreamsF
Stretching his listless limbsF
Or trace hay scented meadows smooth and longQ
Where joy's wild impulse swimsF
In one continued songQ
-
I love at early morn from new mown swathR
To see the startled frog his route pursueF
To mark while leaping o'er the dripping pathS
His bright sides scatter dewF
The early lark that from its bustle fliesF
To hail his matin newF
And watch him to the skiesF
-
To note on hedgerow baulks in moisture sprentF
The jetty snail creep from the mossy thornG
With earnest heed and tremulous intentF
Frail brother of the mornG
That from the tiny bent's dew misted leavesF
Withdraws his timid hornG
And fearful vision weavesF
-
Or swallow heed on smoke tanned chimney topT
Wont to be first unsealing Morning's eyeE
Ere yet the bee hath gleaned one wayward dropT
Of honey on his thighE
To see him seek morn's airy couch to singB
Until the golden skyE
Bepaint his russet wingB
-
Or sauntering boy by tanning corn to spyE
With clapping noise to startle birds awayU
And hear him bawl to every passer byE
To know the hour of dayU
While the uncradled breezes fresh and strongQ
With waking blossoms playU
And breathe olian songQ
-
I love the south west wind or low or loudF
And not the less when sudden drops of rainV
Moisten my glowing cheek from ebon cloudF
Threatening soft showers againW
That over lands new ploughed and meadow groundsF
Summer's sweet breath unchainW
And wake harmonious soundsF
-
Rich music breathes in Summer's every soundF
And in her harmony of varied greensF
Woods meadows hedge rows corn fields all aroundF
Much beauty intervenesF
Filling with harmony the ear and eyeE
While o'er the mingling scenesF
Far spreads the laughing skyE
-
See how the wind enamoured aspen leavesF
Turn up their silver lining to the sunW
And hark the rustling noise that oft deceivesF
And makes the sheep boy runW
The sound so mimics fast approaching showersF
He thinks the rain's begunW
And hastes to sheltering bowersF
-
But now the evening curdles dank and greyU
Changing her watchet hue for sombre weedF
And moping owls to close the lids of dayU
On drowsy wing proceedF
While chickering crickets tremulous and longQ
Light's farewell inly heedF
And give it parting songQ
-
The pranking bat its flighty circlet makesF
The glow worm burnishes its lamp anewW
O'er meadows dew besprent the beetle wakesF
Inquiries ever newW
Teazing each passing ear with murmurs vainW
As wanting to pursueW
His homeward path againW
-
Hark 'tis the melody of distant bellsF
That on the wind with pleasing hum reboundsF
By fitful starts then musically swellsF
O'er the dim stilly groundsF
While on the meadow bridge the pausing boyX
Listens the mellow soundsF
And hums in vacant joyX
-
Now homeward bound the hedger bundles roundF
His evening faggot and with every strideF
His leathern doublet leaves a rustling soundF
Till silly sheep besideF
His path start tremulous and once againW
Look back dissatisfiedF
And scour the dewy plainW
-
How sweet the soothing calmness that distillsF
O'er the heart's every sense its opiate dewsF
In meek eyed moods and ever balmy trillsF
That softens and subduesF
With gentle Quiet's bland and sober trainW
Which dreamy eve renewsF
In many a mellow strainW
-
I love to walk the fields they are to meK
A legacy no evil can destroyX
They like a spell set every rapture freeK
That cheer'd me when a boyX
Play pastime all Time's blotting pen conceal'dF
Comes like a new born joyX
To greet me in the fieldF
-
For Nature's objects ever harmonizeF
With emulous Taste that vulgar deed annoysF
Which loves in pensive moods to sympathizeF
And meet vibrating joysF
O'er Nature's pleasing things nor slighting deemsF
Pastimes the Muse employsF
Vain and obtrusive themesF
