The rosy day was sweet and youngA
The clod brown lark that hail'd the mornB
Had just her summer anthem sungA
And trembling dropped in the cornB
The dew rais'd flower was perk and proudC
The butterfly around it play'dD
The sky's blue clear save woolly cloudC
That pass'd the sun without a shadeD
-
On the pismire's castle hillE
While the burnet buttons quak'dD
While beside the stone pav'd rillE
Cowslip bunches nodding shak'dD
Bees in every peep did tryF
Great had been the honey showerG
Soon their load was on their thighF
Yellow dust as fine as flourG
-
Brazen magpies fond of clackH
Full of insolence and prideD
Chattering on the donkey's backH
Perch'd and pull'd his shaggy hideD
Odd crows settled on the pathI
Dames from milking trotting homeJ
Said the sign foreboded wrathI
And shook their heads at ills to comeK
-
While cows restless from the groundD
Plung'd into the stream and drankL
And the rings went whirling roundD
Till they touch'd the flaggy bankL
On the arch's wall I kneltD
Curious as I often didD
To see the words the sculpture speltD
But the moss its letters hidD
-
Labour sought the water coolM
And stretching took a hearty supN
The fish were playing in the poolM
And turn'd their milk white bellies upN
Clothes laid down behind a bushO
Boys were wading near the pathI
Deeply did the maiden blushP
As she pass'd the merry bathI
-
Some with lines the fish to catchQ
Quirking boys let loose from schoolM
Others side the hedge row watchR
Where the linnet took the woolS
'Tending Hodge had slept too fastD
While his cattle stray'd abroadD
Swift the freed horse gallop'd pastD
Pattering down the stony roadD
-
The gipsies' tune was loud and strongT
As round the camp they danc'd a jigU
And much I lov'd the brown girl's songT
While list'ning on the wooden brigU
The shepherd he was on his roundsV
The dog stopt short to lap the streamW
And jingling in the fallow groundsV
The ploughman urg'd his reeking teamW
-
Often did I stop to gazeX
On each spot once dear to meY
Known 'mong those remember'd daysX
Of banish'd happy infancyY
Often did I view the shadeD
Where once a nest my eyes did fillE
And often mark'd the place I play'dD
At roly poly down the hillE
-
In the wood's deep shade did standD
As I pass'd the sticking troopZ
And Goody begg'd a helping handD
To heave her rotten faggot upN
The riding gate sharp jerking roundD
Follow'd fast my heels againA2
While echo mock'd the clapping soundD
And clap clap sang the woods amainA2
-
The wood is sweet I love it wellB2
In spending there my leisure hoursC2
To seek the snail its painted shellB2
And look about for curious flowersC2
Or 'neath the hazel's leafy thatchQ
On a stulp or mossy groundD
Little squirrel's gambols watchR
Dancing oak trees round and roundD
-
Green was the shade I love the woodsD2
When autumn's wind is mourning loudD
To see the leaves float on the floodsE2
Dead within their yellow shroudD
The wood was then in glory spreadD
I love the browning bough to seeY
That litters autumn's dying bedD
Her latest sigh is dear to meY
-
'Neath a spreading shady oakF2
For awhile to muse I layG2
From its grains a bough I brokeF2
To fan the teasing flies awayG2
Then I sought the woodland sideD
Cool the breeze my face did meetD
And the shade the sun did hideD
Though 'twas hot it seemed sweetD
-
And as while I clomb the hillE
Many a distant charm I foundD
Pausing on the lagging millE
That scarcely mov'd its sails aroundD
Hanging o'er a gate or stileH2
Till my curious eye did tireG
Leisure was employ'd awhileH2
Counting many a peeping spireI2
-
While the hot sun 'gan to waneA2
Cooling glooms fast deep'ning stillE
Refreshing greenness spread the plainA2
As black clouds crept the southern hillE
Labour sought a sheltering placeJ2
'Neath some thick wood woven bowerG
While odd rain drops damp'd his faceJ2
Heralds of the coming showerG
-
Where the oak plank cross'd the streamW
Which the early rising lassK2
Climbs with milk pail gathering creamW
Crook'd paths tracking through the grassK2
There where willows hang their boughsL2
Briars and blackthorns form'd a bowerG
Stunted thick by sheep and cowsL2
There I stood to shun the showerG
-
Sweet it was to feel the breezeM2
Blowing cool without the sunA2
Bumming gad flies ceas'd to teazeM2
All seem'd glad the shower to shunA2
Sweet it was to mark the flowerG
Rain drops glist'ning on its headD
Perking up beneath the bowerG
As if rising from the deadD
-
And full sweet it was to lookN2
How clouds misted o'er the hillE
Rain drops how they dimp'd the brookN2
Falling fast and faster stillE
While the gudgeons darting byF
Cring'd 'neath water grasses' shadeD
Startling as each nimble eyeF
Saw the rings the dropples madeD
-
And upon the dripping groundD
As the shower had ceas'd againA2
As the eye was wandering roundD
Trifling troubles caus'd a painA2
Overtaken in the showerG
Bumble bees I wander'd byF
Clinging to The drowking flowerG
Left without the power to flyF
-
And full often drowning wetD
Scampering beetles rac'd awayG2
Safer shelter glad to getD
Flooded out from whence they layG2
While the moth for night's repriefF
Waited safe and snug withalG2
'Neath the plantain's bowery leafF
Where not e'en a drop could fallG2
-
Then the clouds dispers'd againA2
And full sweet it was to viewF
Sunbeams trembling long in vainA2
Now they 'gan to glimmer throughF
And as labour strength regainsM2
From ale's booning bounty givenA2
So reviv'd the fresh'ning plainsM2
From the smiling showers of heavenA2
-
Sweet the birds did chant their songsM2
Blackbird linnet lark and thrushP
Music from a many tonguesM2
Melted from each dripping bushO
Deafen'd echo on the plainA2
As the sunbeams broke the cloudD
Scarce could help repeat the strainA2
Nature's anthem flow'd so loudD
-
What a fresh'ning feeling cameO2
As the sun's smile gleam'd againA2
Summer seem'd no more the sameO2
Such a mildness swept the plainA2
Breezes such as one would seekP2
Cooling infants of the showerG
Fanning sweet the burning cheekP2
Trembled through the bramble bowerG
-
Insects of mysterious birthQ2
Sudden struck my wondering sightD
Doubtless brought by moisture forthR2
Hid in knots of spittle whiteD
Backs of leaves the burthen bearS2
Where the sunbeams cannot strayG2
Wood seers call'd that wet declareS2
So the knowing shepherds sayG2
-
As the cart rut rippled downA2
With the burden of the rainA2
Boys came drabbling from the townA2
Glad to meet their sports againA2
Stopping up the mimic rillsG2
Till they forc'd their frothy boundD
Then the keck made water millsG2
In the current whisk'd aroundD
-
Once again did memory painA2
O'er the life she once had ledD
Once did manhood wish againA2
Childish joys had never fledD
Could I lay these woes asideD
Which I long have murmur'd o'erG
Mix a boy with boys I sigh'dD
Fate should then be teas'd no moreT2
-
Hot the sun in summer warmsG2
Quick the roads dry o'er the plainA2
Girls with baskets on their armsG2
Soon renew'd their sports againA2
O'er the green they sought their playG2
Where the cowslip bunches grewF
Quick the rush bent fann'd awayG2
As they danc'd and bounded throughF
-
Some went searching by the woodD
Peeping 'neath the weaving thornA2
Where the pouch lipp'd cuckoo budD
From its snug retreat was tornA2
Where the ragged robin stoodD
With its pip'd stem streak'd with jetD
And the crow flowers golden huedD
Careless plenty easier metD
-
Some with many an anxious painA2
Childish wishes to pursueF
From the pond head gaz'd in vainA2
On the flag flower's yellow hueF
Smiling in its safety thereS2
Sleeping o'er its shadow'd bloomU2
While the flood's triumphing careS2
Crimpled round its guarded homeJ
-
Then I stood to pause againA2
Retrospection sigh'd and smil'dD
Musing 'tween a joy and painA2
How I acted when a childD
When by clearing brooks I've beenA2
Where the painted sky was givenA2
Thinking if I tumbled inA2
I should fall direct to heavenA2
-
Many an hour had come and goneA2
Since the town last met my eyeF
Where huge baskets mauling onA2
Maids hung out their clothes to dryF
Granny there was on the benchV2
Coolly sitting in the swailG2
Stopping oft a love sick wenchV2
To pinch her snuff and hear her taleG2
-
Be the journey e'er so meanA2
Passing by a cot or treeY
In the rout there's something seenA2
Which the curious love to seeY
In each ramble taste's warm soulsG2
More of wisdom's self can viewF
Than blind ignorance beholdsG2
All life's seven stages throughF
