O far is fled the winter windA
And far is fled the frost and snowB
But the cold scorn on my love's browC
Hath never yet prepared to goB
-
More lasting than ten winters' windA
More cutting than ten weeks of frostD
Is the chill frowning of thy mindA
Where my poor heart was pledged and lostD
-
I see thee taunting down the streetE
And by the frowning that I seeF
I might have known it long ere nowC
Thy love was never meant for meF
-
And had I known ere I beganG
That love had been so hard to winH
I would have filled my heart with prideI
Nor left one hope to let love inH
-
I would have wrapped it in my breastJ
And pinned it with a silver pinH
Safe as a bird within its nestJ
And 'scaped the trouble I am inH
-
I wish I was a happy birdK
And thou a true and timid doveL
O I would fly the land of griefM
And rest me in the land of loveL
-
O I would rest where I love bestJ
Where I love best I may not beF
A hawk doth on that rose tree sitN
And drives young love to fear and fleeF
-
O would I were the goldfinch gayO
My richer suit had tempted strongP
O would I were the nightingaleQ
Thou then had'st listened to my songP
-
Though deep my scorn I cannot hateR
Thy beauty's sweet though sour thy prideI
To praise thee is to love thee stillS
And it doth cheer my heart besideI
-
For I could swim the deepest lakeT
And I could climb the highest treeF
The greatest danger face and braveU
And all for one kind kiss of theeF
-
O love is here and love is thereV
O love is like no other thingW
Its frowns can make a king a slaveU
Its smiles can make a slave a kingW
