| Life still expects and empty falls at last | A |
| Warm Hope on tiptoe drops into the tomb | B |
| Life's journey's rough Hope seeks a smoother way | C |
| And dwells on fancies which to morrow see | D |
| To morrow comes true copy of to day | C |
| And empty shadow of what is to be | D |
| Yet cheated Hope on future still depends | E |
| And ends but only when our being ends | E |
| I long have hoped and still shall hope the best | F |
| Till heedless weeds are scrambling over me | D |
| And hopes and ashes both together rest | F |
| At journey's end with them that cease to be | D |
