Home Yearnings Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCD EAFADD GFGDDD DHDHII JIJIKL BIBIMM NONOCD

O for that sweet untroubled restA
That poets oft have sungB
The babe upon its mother's breastA
The bird upon its youngB
The heart asleep without a painC
When shall I know that sleep againD
-
When shall I be as I have beenE
Upon my mother's breastA
Sweet Nature's garb of verdant greenF
To woo to perfect restA
Love in the meadow field and glenD
And in my native wilds againD
-
The sheep within the fallow fieldG
The herd upon the greenF
The larks that in the thistle shieldG
And pipe from morn to e'enD
O for the pasture fields and fenD
When shall I see such rest againD
-
I love the weeds along the fenD
More sweet than garden flowersH
For freedom haunts the humble glenD
That blest my happiest hoursH
Here prison injures health and meI
I love sweet freedom and the freeI
-
The crows upon the swelling hillsJ
The cows upon the leaI
Sheep feeding by the pasture rillsJ
Are ever dear to meI
Because sweet freedom is their mateK
While I am lone and desolateL
-
I loved the winds when I was youngB
When life was dear to meI
I loved the song which Nature sungB
Endearing libertyI
I loved the wood the vale the streamM
For there my boyhood used to dreamM
-
There even toil itself was playN
'T was pleasure e'en to weepO
'T was joy to think of dreams by dayN
The beautiful of sleepO
When shall I see the wood and plainC
And dream those happy dreams againD
