Effusion. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABCDDEEFGHHIIJJKKLL MMNOPPKKHQLLKKRRKKSS TTKKUUVVKKWXWXAh little did I think in time that's past | A |
By summer burnt or numb'd by winter's blast | A |
Delving the ditch a livelihood to earn | B |
Or lumping corn out in a dusty barn | C |
With aching bones returning home at night | D |
And sitting down with weary hand to write | D |
Ah little did I think as then unknown | E |
Those artless rhymes I even blush'd to own | E |
Would be one day applauded and approv'd | F |
By learning notic'd and by genius lov'd | G |
God knows my hopes were many but my pain | H |
Damp'd all the prospect which I hop'd to gain | H |
I hardly dar'd to hope Thou corner chair | I |
In which I've oft slung back in deep despair | I |
Hadst thou expression thou couldst easy tell | J |
The pains and all that I have known too well | J |
'Twould be but sorrow's tale yet still 'twould be | K |
A tale of truth and passing sweet to me | K |
How oft upon my hand I've laid my head | L |
And thought how poverty deform'd our shed | L |
Look'd on each parent's face I fain had cheer'd | M |
Where sorrow triumph'd and pale want appear'd | M |
And sigh'd and hop'd and wish'd some day would come | N |
When I might bring a blessing to their home | O |
That toil and merit comforts had in store | P |
To bid the tear defile their cheeks no more | P |
Who that has feelings would not wish to be | K |
A friend to parents such as mine to me | K |
Who in distress broke their last crust in twain | H |
And though rant pinch'd the remnant broke again | Q |
And still if craving of their scanty bread | L |
Gave their last mouthful that I might be fed | L |
Nor for their own wants tear drops follow'd free | K |
Worse anguish stung they had no more for me | K |
And now hope's sun is looking brighter out | R |
And spreading thin the clouds of fear and doubt | R |
That long in gloomy sad suspense to me | K |
Hid the long waited smiles I wish'd to see | K |
And now my parents helping you is sweet | S |
The rudest havoc fortune could complete | S |
A piteous couple little blest with friends | T |
Where pain and poverty have had their ends | T |
I'll be thy crutch my father lean on me | K |
Weakness knits stubborn while its bearing thee | K |
And hard shall fall the shock of fortune's frown | U |
To eke thy sorrows ere it breaks me down | U |
My mother too thy kindness shall be met | V |
And ere I'm able will I pay the debt | V |
For what thou'st done and what gone through for me | K |
My last earn'd sixpence will I break with thee | K |
And when my dwindled sum won't more divide | W |
Then take it all to fate I'll leave the rest | X |
In helping thee I'll always feel a pride | W |
Nor think I'm happy till ye both are blest | X |
