Badger Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCBBDDEEFF GGHHGIJJIIKKLL IIMMNNOPAAQQ

When midnight comes a host of dogs and menA
Go out and track the badger to his denA
And put a sack within the hole and lieB
Till the old grunting badger passes byB
He comes an hears they let the strongest looseC
The old fox gears the noise and drops the gooseC
The poacher shoots and hurries from the cryB
And the old hare half wounded buzzes byB
They get a forked stick to bear him downD
And clap the dogs and take him to the townD
And bait him all the day with many dogsE
And laugh and shout and fright the scampering hogsE
He runs along and bites at all he meetsF
They shout and hollo down the noisy streetsF
-
He turns about to face the loud uproarG
And drives the rebels to their very doorG
The frequent stone is hurled where'er they goH
When badgers fight then everyone's a foeH
The dogs are clapped and urged to join the fray'G
The badger turns and drives them all awayI
Though scarcely half as big demure and smallJ
He fights with dogs for hours and beats them allJ
The heavy mastiff savage in the frayI
Lies down and licks his feet and turns awayI
The bulldog knows his match and waxes coldK
The badger grins and never leaves his holdK
He drives the crowd and follows at their heelsL
And bites them through the drunkard swears and reelsL
-
The frighted women take the boys awayI
The blackguard laughs and hurries on the frayI
He tries to reach the woods and awkward raceM
But sticks and cudgels quickly stop the chaseM
He turns again and drives the noisy crowdN
And beats the many dogs in noises loudN
He drives away and beats them every oneO
And then they loose them all and set them onP
He falls as dead and kicked by boys and menA
Then starts and grins and drives the crowd againA
Till kicked and torn and beaten out he liesQ
And leaves his hold and crackles groans and diesQ
